Kathmandu, April 25: On the occasion of Earthquake Memorial Day, President Ram Chandra Poudel emphasized the urgent need to raise awareness among the public to minimize risks from earthquakes.

In a heartfelt message, the President paid tribute to the victims of the devastating May 30, 2012 earthquake, which struck with its epicenter in Barpak, Gorkha. He acknowledged that while earthquakes are natural disasters, human-made vulnerabilities and dense settlements have increased the risk of casualties.

“Our country’s geographical location and physical infrastructure make it highly prone to natural disasters,” said President Poudel. “Though we cannot stop earthquakes, we can certainly reduce the risk to lives.”

He commended the National Reconstruction Authority (NRA) for completing the majority of reconstruction work and highlighted the importance of using earthquake-resistant technology in rebuilt structures. He also expressed satisfaction over the progress made and thanked everyone who contributed directly or indirectly to the reconstruction efforts.

President Poudel concluded by calling on all citizens to unite in efforts for earthquake risk reduction, reconstruction, and rehabilitation, ensuring a safer future for all.
