Moscow, April 26: General Yaroslav Moskalik, a top Russian military commander, has been killed in a car bomb explosion in Moscow, Russian officials confirmed on Friday.

Moskalik becomes the latest high-ranking military or pro-Kremlin figure believed to have been targeted by Ukrainian forces inside Russia.

The blast occurred while Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoffle, was in Moscow for Ukraine peace talks with President Vladimir Putin. The incident has further signaled that Europe and Ukraine appear sidelined from the ongoing negotiations.

This is the highest-ranking military loss for Russia in recent times. Previously:

  • General Igor Kirilov, head of Russia’s chemical and biological protection forces, was found dead in December 2024.
  • Missile scientist Mikhail Shatsky was shot dead in a forest near Moscow days earlier.
  • In December 2023, pro-Russian Ukrainian politician Ilya Kiva was gunned down outside Moscow.
  • In April 2023, blogger Vladlen Tatarski was killed by a bomb hidden inside a statue during a St. Petersburg event.

While Ukrainian security services have not officially claimed responsibility, it is widely believed they are involved in or at least supportive of the ongoing targeted attacks inside Russian territory.
