Kathmandu, March 22. During his visit to New Delhi on Saturday, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said that India’s plan to purchase Russian missiles could trigger the U.S. to impose sanctions on India.

While responding to an Indian reporter’s question on the S-400 Russian missile system, Austin said “We certainly urge all our allies and partners to move away from Russian equipment … and really avoid any kind of acquisitions that would trigger sanctions on our behalf.”

Austin added “We are aware of the fact that they have expressed interest in acquiring the system. But, they have not acquired an S-400 system yet, so there would be no reason for sanctions to be on the table.”

Media reports suggest that the S-400 system can be used to illegally retrieve information from US intelligence. Therefore, both US and Russian equipment cannot exist together.
