Myanmar Chief Minister and 9,000 others seek refuge in India

Kathmandu, June 16. Chief Minister of Myanmar’s Chin state – Salai Lian Luai has taken refuge in Mizoram following the military coup and unrest in Myanmar.
It is said that Luai crossed over to India on Monday night via the border town of Champai, which is around 185 km from state capital Aizwal. Since the coup took place in February, over 9,000 people have sought for refuge in Mizoram.
Luai and 23 other lawmakers from the National League for Democracy (NLD) are among those taking refuge. The NLD is former State Counsellor and Foreign Affairs Minister Aung San Suu Kyi’s party.
They have taken shelters in districts in Mizoram that adjoins the Myanmar border. Many civil service organizations, NGOs and locals have been providing them with help.
According to data, 1,633 people have taken refuge in Aizawl, 1,297 in Lawngtlai district, 633 in Siaha district, 478 in Hnahthial district, 167 in Lunglei district, 143 in Serchhip district, 112 in Saitual district, 36 in Kolasib district, and 28 in Khawzawl district.
Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga said Tuesday that his government had also sanctioned money to provide relief to those who had taken refuge in his state.
