Kathmandu, June 29. The Press Council Nepal on Tuesday announced to shut down six online news publishers for spreading rumors relating to the Rupa Sunar case.
The media regulatory body wrote a letter to the Nepal Telecommunications Authority in order to act against the following media portals:
- khabarmala.com
- kalapanipost.com
- media20post.com
- ajakonaya.com
- galaxysevenexpress.com
- sajhamedia.com
These portals were found spreading baseless claims that ‘Rupa Sunar received 1.5 crore rupees from the European Union as a commission to sensitize the issue against untouchability.’
Agency reports suggest that Sunar lodged a complaint claiming that the false stories spread by the news portals could spark ethnic conflict and caste-based discrimination.
