UN elects new council members including Japan, Switzerland
Kathmandu, June 10. United Nations(UN) has elected five new countries to be members of the UN Security Council. The decision was made unopposed on Thursday.
The countries were Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique and Switzerland.
Moreover, winning a seat in the 15-member Security Council is considered an achievement as it gives the countries a strong voice in matters of international concern. Even if a country is running unopposed, it must obtain the votes of two-thirds of the member states that voted in order to win a seat on the council.
The results of the secret ballot were Ecuador 190, Japan 184, Malta 185, Mozambique 192, and Switzerland 187. The voters were countries of the 193 member General Assembly.
Currently, issues of Ukraine, Syria, Yemen among others are major concern in the UN.
