Cough Syrups from Maiden Pharma kills 66 children in Gambia
Kathmandu, October 8. Cough syrups manufactured by Maiden Pharmaceuticals Ltd, a Delhi-based company have been found to be of substandard quality. They have a manufacturing unit in Haryana. It killed 66 children in Gambia. Most children were under two years old.
While the company claims to adhere by WHO standards and good manufacturing practices, WHO has issued a medical product alert regarding their products. Their products have been found with contaminants, which could be damaging to the liver and kidney.
Further, this is not the first time that Maiden Pharma has been caught. They were previously caught in Kerala in 2021 and 2022 five times for the products being substandard. Additionally, they have been caught by authorities of Gujrat in 2015 on similar grounds.
It has come to light that Maiden directly supplies the medicines to Gambia and and African poor countries without any quality check.
To control such kind of incidents, medicines should be supplied through the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI). Strict monitoring must be done and action must be taken.
