20.2 million children Starving in Horn of Africa; Require urgent treatment for severe acute malnutrition

Kathmandu, December 25. The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warned on Tuesday that an estimated 20.2 million children in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia are experiencing the major threats of starvation, hunger, and disease.
These three countries, toogether known as the “Horn of Africa” are under the impact of severe drought. Since the majority of the families maintain a pastoral lifestyle, the drought which is causing livestock deaths is causing a food crisis and the spread of diseases.
Earlier in February, World Food Programme (WFP) identified climate change, conflict, global inflation, and grain shortages as root causes for the devastation. ‘Since 2019, there has been inadequate rainfall, which has seriously affected 70% of all harvests and increased market prices for food, water, and other commodities.’
In July, 10 million children were facing the threat of severe hunger. This value has doubled in five months. According to UNICEF, “almost 20 million children need urgent treatment for severe acute malnutrition.”
