Nepal welcoming over 230 global delegates for 7th International “Peacekeeping” Symposium starting Monday

Kathmandu, June 10. The Government of Nepal, in collaboration with the United Nations, is preparing to organize an international symposium on “Partnership for Technology in Peacekeeping” in Kathmandu.

The four-day event is scheduled to commence on June 12 and conclude on June 15.

The Nepali Defense Ministry announced that the international symposium will serve as a platform for member countries to exchange experiences regarding technology, challenges, and best practices in peacekeeping missions. This comes in the context of rapid technological advancements and growing security threats. The Ministry spokesperson, Prakash Poudel, informed reporters on Friday that the event will receive support from the UN Department of Operational Support and the Office of Information and Communications Technology.

According to the Nepali Army, the symposium will witness the participation of a total of 230 individuals, including representatives from 51 member states of the UN, experts from 11 peacekeeping missions, and force commanders. Notably, Under Secretary General of the UN Department of Operational Support, Atul Khare, will also be attending the symposium.

Nepal in UN Peacekeeping

Nepal holds a significant role in UN Peacekeeping, currently ranking as the second-largest contributor to peacekeeping operations worldwide. Presently, 6,073 Nepali Army personnel, including 525 female soldiers, are deployed across 13 different missions globally. Nepal’s involvement in UN peacekeeping dates back to 1958, with over 145,000 Nepali army personnel having served in 44 missions to date. Tragically, the Nepali Army database records that 72 members have lost their lives and 66 have suffered injuries while on peacekeeping missions.

Demonstrating its commitment to peacekeeping, Nepal has pledged to provide up to 10,000 peacekeepers for future UN missions.
