‘Sentence them to death’: Women lawmakers demand
Kathmandu. The disrespect for human sensitivity and lack of fear for law has pushed Nepali lawmakers to the extreme to make demands of death sentence to rapists.
At a meeting of the Women and Social Development Committee under the House of Representatives on Wednesday, lawmakers opined that the laws against rape were not adequate to control the evil act. Moreover, the implementation side of the laws was also very weak.
Nepali Congress’s whip Pushpa Bhusal demanded more stringent punishments to rapists. The dissatisfaction over the dealings with rape cases at present was vehemently represented in the statement of Radha Gyawali of Nepal Community Party. She said most women members of the House advocated for death sentence to the rapists.
President of the Committee Niru Devi Pal emphasized on discussions regarding the provision of death sentence in the laws for rapists.
Although the Home Ministry data claims of 80 percent of the rapists to have been arrested, the law makers were not satisfied with the overall scenario. They said in unison that existing laws will not be able to control the surging rape cases, government must take severe measures.
