Nepal Advances to SAFF Women’s Championship Final After Penalty Shootout Win Over India
Kathmandu, Oct 27: Nepal has secured a spot in the finals of the SAFF Women’s Championship after a thrilling victory over India in a penalty shootout on Sunday.
The match ended 1-1 in regular time, forcing the game into a tense penalty shootout. Nepal’s goalkeeper Anjana Rana Magar emerged as the hero, saving two penalties from Indian players, while four Nepali players successfully converted their shots to claim the win.
Controversy arose during the match when Preeti Rai of Nepal scored a goal, which was initially awarded by the referee. However, following protests from the Indian side, the goal was overturned, resulting in a one-hour stoppage.
Nepal’s Savitra Bhandari quickly responded at the start of the second half with a goal to equalize. Earlier, in the 50th minute, Nepal’s Rekha Paudel was sent off with a red card after receiving a second yellow.
Nepal will now face Bangladesh in the final for the championship title.
