Kathmandu, April 27: Journalist Sabina Karki sustained serious eye injuries during a clash between teachers and police in New Baneshwor on Sunday.

Karki was immediately rushed to Tilganga Eye Hospital for treatment. According to Dr. Shivansi Shrestha, both her eye lenses were swollen and there was internal bleeding, causing an increase in eye pressure and making it difficult to assess her retina condition. Retina tests will be conducted once the internal bleeding subsides.

The incident occurred when police threw a bucket of water at Karki while she was covering the protest, leading to the injury. Tensions had already been high after teachers entered a restricted area on Saturday and continued their demonstrations on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) Chairperson Nirmala Sharma expressed concern over the growing threats to journalist safety, stating that since April 30, journalists have been compelled to prioritize their own protection while reporting. She emphasized that the FNJ is taking active steps to address these challenges.
