Kathmandu, Sept 10: Former U.S. Defense Department official Jim Townsend has said that Russian drones entering Polish airspace is “hard to mistake” and signals a deliberate provocation.

Speaking to BBC Newsday, Townsend said, “One drone mistake is possible, but not many drone mistakes. Poland needs time to investigate, but this is not just an error — it’s a test that NATO must answer.”

He stressed that the situation is currently “completely under control” of Poland and NATO. “The drones were detected on Polish radar and NATO acted immediately. Now it depends on the political side of NATO whether its response is appropriate,” he added.

Earlier, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed that military action had been launched following “several violations of Polish airspace.” The Polish military said it had seized two drones and was continuing operations to track down others.
