Kathmandu, Sept 19: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said that attempts by the United States to pressure India and China through threats and tariffs are failing to produce results.

Speaking on Russia’s main Channel One TV program The Great Game on Thursday, Lavrov argued that Washington is slowly realizing it cannot dictate terms to two of the world’s oldest civilizations. “India and China are both ancient civilizations. We say to them, ‘Either stop doing things we don’t like, or we will impose taxes on you,’” Lavrov noted, adding that such language “does not work.”

According to Lavrov, the ongoing high-level dialogues between Washington and Beijing as well as Washington and New Delhi show that the US side “understands this new reality” and is adjusting its tone. He said the US approach has not only strained its economic ties with the two Asian powers but has also “created serious problems, forcing all three countries to look for new markets.”

Lavrov’s remarks reflect Moscow’s longstanding position of siding with India and China in opposition to Western economic pressure. Both Asian giants have increased trade with Russia since Western sanctions were imposed over the war in Ukraine.
