Deadliest Fire in 77 Years Claims 55 Lives in Hong Kong’s Tai Po District
Kathmandu, Nov 27: A massive fire engulfed a large residential complex in Hong Kong’s Tai Po district on Wednesday, marking the deadliest blaze the city has seen in 77 years.
The inferno, which spread rapidly through bamboo-scaffolded towers in Wang Phuc Court, has claimed 55 lives so far and left 76 people seriously injured. Authorities report that 279 residents are still missing.
The residential complex consisted of eight high-rise buildings, each 35 floors tall, with nearly 2,000 apartments in total. The fire broke out in three of the towers and raged for nearly 10 hours before being partially brought under control. Despite efforts, parts of the fire remained uncontrolled even after 20 hours.
Police have arrested three individuals, including a contractor linked to ongoing construction work. They are suspected of negligence or criminal homicide in connection with the blaze. Officials have not released details about the suspects’ addresses.
In light of the tragedy, authorities have postponed all campaign activities for the December 7 elections.
