Home Secretary Stresses Strong Role of Local Governments in Disaster Management

Kathmandu, March 10: Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs Rajkumar Shrestha has said that local governments should be made strong and responsible in disaster management.

During an observation and inspection visit to the office of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, Secretary Shrestha said local levels should take primary responsibility while provincial and federal governments should provide necessary resources and technical support.

Referring to the recent House of Representatives elections, he mentioned that the forecasting support provided by the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology helped address public curiosity about weather conditions, emphasizing the need to strengthen preparedness and response based on reliable forecasts.

During the visit, the Authority’s Executive Chief, Engineer Dinesh Bhatta, presented the work being carried out by the Authority along with existing challenges and expectations from the ministry.

On the same occasion, Secretary Shrestha also released the ‘Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Handbook’ prepared by the Authority.
