Bandana Rana re-elected as member of CEDAW
Kathmandu. Bandana Rana of Nepal has been re-elected as a member of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). The election was conducted on Monday. Rana, who is the vice-chair of the committee currently, had filed nomination for a second tenure.
Rana received 137 votes out of the 189 votes cast and became the third highest vote recipient in the election. In the previous election four years back, she had received 106 votes, which made her the sixth highest vote recipient among the 11 members then.
20 candidates had contended for the 11-member committee. Newly re-elected member Rana noted that it would be easier for her to work in the field of human rights in her second term in office. She also hoped that her second tenure would be more successful.
She is the first Nepali to hold such a high office in a UN committee. Officials will be chosen out of the 11 members later.
Rana, who was the only contender from among the South Asian nations, had received all votes from the region. Three other members — China, Lebanon and Philippines — have been elected from Asia in the committee besides Nepal.
