Revised height of Mt Everest to be announced today
Kathmandu. Nepal and China are making a joint declaration of the height of Mt Everest today. It is the first time Nepal is declaring the height of Everest using the data obtained with its own resources, means and technology, according to the Survey Department of Nepal.
According to Director General Prakash Joshi of the Survey Department, all necessary surveys and data processing have been done in Nepal by Nepali manpower. The whole process and output has been discussed with the Chinese side and on the consent of both parties, the height is about to be disclosed on Tuesday.
The proposal of the Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation to announce the new height had been approved by the Cabinet meeting on Nov 25.
China had started measuring the height from the northern face as Nepal reached the final stage of measuring the height of Everest which was started two years ago. Nepal and China had agreed to declare the new height of Everest during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Nepal last year.
The current height of Mt Everest is 8,848 meters.
