Kathmandu.

Twitter has become an increasingly popular social media platform, where a wide range of people have their authorized media handles. Tweets pour in from the heads of states, heads of governments and political leaders on a daily basis.

President Trump has often landed in controversies because of his tweets. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi also uses his twitter handle to share announcements and decisions. Both have been immensely criticized for their works in their comments section. But both have mostly either ignored the criticisms or moved along with it.

President of Nepal- Bidya Devi Bhandari joined twitter on April 2018, and is followed by around 18,400 people. On August 31, the President had tweeted regarding the death of the ex-president of India, Dr. Pranab Mukherjee. The tweet had 95 comments, 166 re-tweets and 1,600 likes.

The president’s twitter handle disabled the comments after that on September 3. President Bhandari has 40 tweets up until now. According to sources from Shital Niwas, they say that the comments on her tweets were indecent, abusive and were not suitable to be seen. Sources also say, “After receiving some suggestions, the comments are disabled for the time being,”

People have been criticizing that their right to freedom of speech is being seized by disabling the comments section. But Bhesh Raj Adhikari, personal secretary of President Bhandari, says “the press releases and tweets from the president’s office on various occasions have always been open for creative and healthy responses.”
