Trump picks Amy Coney Barrett as Supreme Court justice
Washington.
Trump has nominated Amy Coney Barrett for the position of a Supreme Court justice, which has been vacant since Ruth Bader Ginsberg passed away. Going against the requests of his opposition, this move is said to have been made ahead of the Election Day to increase his chances of being re-elected.
Barrett has previously worked as an assistant to Antonin Scalia and she claimed that she has followed Scalia’s judicial philosophy. According to a report in The New York Times, Trump commented, “I haven’t said it was her, but she is outstanding.” The President’s political advisors have also stated that the move might solidify the conservative base in the highest court of the country. Republican Senators are said to be all set to confirm her nomination before November 3.
In 2016, Obama had proposed Merrick Garland for the position of a Supreme Court justice, months before the elections. This move was highly criticized and rejected by the very Republicans who now support the current President’s decision.
