Chief Minister defends decision to make Bhalubang the capital of Province 5

Kathmandu. Shankar Pokharel, the Chief Minister of Province No. 5, defended the government’s decision to move the capital of the province from Butwal to Bhalubang in Dang district.

On Monday, Pokharel wrote a Facebook status stating that ‘Lumbini, which was restricted to 6 districts, is now being expanded to 12 districts. This is a matter of pride for the people of the province as a whole.’

The decision regarding the capital of Province No. 5 was made by the Council of Ministers of the province with the approval of chairs of Nepal Communist Party (NCP), Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’. The council of ministers also announced to change the name of Province No. 5 to ‘Lumbini’.

Regular protests have been witnessed in Butwal after the announcement. On Sunday evening, Chief Minister Pokharel’s vehicle was pelted with stones.
