Kathmandu. The government is planning to make amendments on the Drugs Act-2035(BS) through an ordinance. The meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers on Monday has decided to present the ordinance to the president to make changes in the Drugs Act- 2035, a minister informed.

While the former speakers of the House of Representatives have urged to call the parliamentary session, the government has made plans to amend the Drugs Act through ordinance, which is a clear message that the session would not be called any time soon. After the intraparty discord in the ruling Nepal Communist party (NCP) soared up, on the recommendation of the Council of Ministers, President Bidya Devi Bhandari had prorogued the parliamentary session in July.

The government is about to modify the Drugs Act in connection with the corona pandemic. There is a constitutional provision of ordinance for the preparation of laws during times when the parliamentary session is not running.  The ordinance will come into effect after President Bhandari’s approval.

The purchase, supply and distribution of medicines are carried according to the Drugs Act. It’s however not clear as to what modifications the government wants to make in the previous act.
