Kathmandu, December 28. Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Tesla has said that one doesn’t need a college degree to get a job at Tesla. At a satellite 2020 conference, he said that colleges are there to have fun and not merely to learn, giving examples of Bill Gates and Larry Ellison, college dropouts who made it big. He also added that one can learn anything online for free.

Apple CEO Tim Cook also questioned the need of college degrees adding that half of Apple’s employees in 2019 did not hold a degree. He also added that colleges do not teach the skills needed for the workforce. Top companies such as Google and Apple have been hiring people without degrees but with skills. Recently, Google has launched ‘Google Career Certificate’, a six-month program that prepare applicants for in-demand jobs.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, workers that hold at least a bachelors degree earned $502 than who did not. It is said that degrees put students into debts, therefore many students cannot afford to get a bachelors degree.

Experts and researchers have been working on alternatives which could better prepare the young workforce for the future, some of them being apprenticeship programs and on-the-job trainings.
