The Syrian Army through an official statement on Sunday confirmed that Israel deployed missiles from the Golan Heights that targeted prime locations around the Syrian capital Damascus.

A Syrian military source told state news agency SANA, “At 10:16 this evening (2016 GMT), the Israeli enemy carried out an aerial attack from the direction of the occupied Syrian Golan on some targets in the Damascus area.”

Most of the missiles were downed by the Syrian Air Defenses. The residents in the capital observed the destroying of the Israeli missiles by the air defence.

An Israeli military spokesman denied commenting on the statement.

While addressing the supporters of the ruling party on Friday, Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz had said that Israel was taking weekly actions to prevent Iranian entrenchment in Syria.

In the past few years, Israel has been conducting frequent attacks on Syria. Sources describe the attacks as a shadow war on Iranian-linked targets to reduce Iran’s influence to Syria.
