Kathmandu, March 30. China has reduced their number of seats in the HongKong legislature after a two-day meeting of the China legislature.

Currently, 35 seats of the 70-seat legislature are directly elected. The legislature will be expanded to 90 seats, and only 20 will be elected by the public.

In the current 70-member legislature, voters elect half the members and the other half are chosen by constituencies representing various professions and interest groups. The new body will have 20 elected members, 30 chosen by the constituencies and 40 by an Election Committee, bringing the total to 90.

This strategic move comes from China as there had been political protest and opposition in Hong Kong in 2019. Thousands of people took to the streets for the protests as government resisted their demands.
