Kathmandu, October 29. The 10 days long Sama Chakeva festival has begun in the Mithilanchal region today. This special festival represents the symbol of affection between brothers and sisters.

During the 10 days, brothers collect mud from nearby lands and give it to the sisters. The sister, daughter, and daughters-in-law of the family perform traditional folk songs and group dances and prepare sama chakeva replicas out of the mud brought by the brothers.

The replicas made by the sisters are kept in a red basket and are taken to nearby public places such as schools, Dharamshala, temples, and riverbanks. Women in the community hold public gatherings where they sing and dance together.

On the eleventh day, the brothers smash the mud replicas and dispose of them in nearby forests.
