Kathmandu, March 17. The Nawalparasi District Jail (Bardaghat-Susta West) is struggling with management due to an overcrowded facility, with three times the number of inmates than its intended capacity.

Currently, the jail is accommodating 498 inmates, despite having a capacity of only 177.

According to jailer Punaram Poudel, the inmates are experiencing difficulties with basic necessities such as eating, sleeping, and using the toilets due to overcrowding.

“Some inmates have resorted to sleeping in rooms intended for other purposes, such as entertainment hall,” Poudel said.

The jail is currently housing 421 men, 74 women and three minors, and the increasing number of inmates has caused numerous issues for the facility. The overcrowding also poses a risk of communicable diseases spreading among the inmates.

Earlier, the facility was located in a congested market area of Parasi’s main bazaar. Recently, the jail was shifted to a distant open space. “Even after the relocation, we have been facing issues related to overcrowding,” Poudel said.
