Kathmandu, Oct 3: In the 19th Asian Games hosted in China, Nepal faced a challenging match against cricket powerhouse India in the quarterfinals, ultimately falling short by 23 runs.

The game, held at the Jejung University of Technology cricket field in Hanjau, witnessed India posting a formidable total of 202 runs for the loss of four wickets in their allotted 20 overs after winning the toss. In response, Nepal managed to score 179 runs for the loss of nine wickets, coming agonizingly close but ultimately unable to secure the victory.

For Nepal, Dipendra Singh Airee played a valiant innings, contributing 32 runs from 15 balls, while Sandeep Jora and Kushal Malla added 29 runs each to the total. Jora’s explosive 22-ball innings included a six and two fours, while Malla showcased his skills with four boundaries and a six in his 28-run effort. Asif Sheikh chipped in with 10 runs from six balls.

In the Indian bowling attack, Ravi Bishnoi stood out with his four-over spell, taking three crucial wickets while conceding 24 runs. Abhishek Khan also made his presence felt, securing three wickets by giving away 32 runs in his four overs. Arshadip Singh and Sai Kishore claimed one wicket each.

Before Nepal’s innings, India had set a challenging target of 202 runs, largely due to Yashasvi Jaiswal’s remarkable century. Jaiswal’s explosive 100 off 49 balls, featuring eight fours and seven sixes, played a pivotal role in India’s imposing total.

Deepender Singh Airee delivered a crucial breakthrough for Nepal by dismissing India’s captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad, for just 23 runs in the 10th over. However, India managed to hold onto their lead despite these efforts by the Nepalese team.

This encounter marked Nepal’s first-ever appearance in the quarterfinals of the Asian Games cricket tournament, a significant achievement for the emerging cricket nation. While they narrowly missed out on a semi-final berth, the team’s spirited performance garnered admiration and showcased their potential in the international cricket arena.
