Kathmandu, March 11: A senior US diplomat has expressed optimism about a partial ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia ahead of high-level talks between US and Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Monday, “I’m not saying this is enough, but we need these exemptions to end the war.”

A Ukrainian official told AFP that Kyiv is expected to propose an air and naval ceasefire during the discussions scheduled for Tuesday. However, Russia has rejected any temporary ceasefire, calling it an attempt to prevent Ukraine’s military collapse.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Saudi Arabia on Monday to meet Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. However, he is not expected to attend the formal ceasefire talks in Riyadh.

In his Monday night video address, Zelenskyy said he expected “concrete results” from the discussions.
