3,000 year old gold mask found in China, becomes material for viral memes

Kathmandu, March 24. A 3,000 year-old gold mask was discovered in Sichuan province in China. The mask later become a popular meme material in social media.
The mask was one of 500 Bronze-Age relics found at the Sanxingdui archaeological site. But the mask has also garnered quite an amount of attention on social media. It has become a popular meme material in the local social site Weibo.
The hashtag “Sanxingdui gold mask photo editing competition” is popular on the site and has been viewed over 4 million times.
Officials from Sanxingdui were also surprised at the edits of the gold mask on social media and launched a promotional video praising how the artefact had gone viral.
In addition to the gold mask, archaeologists have found bronze pieces as well as artefacts made from ivory, jade and silk.
