US President Biden stands by withdrawal decision
Kathmandu, Aug 17. US President Joe Biden has made it clear that he will be standing by his decision of withdrawing US Troops from Afghanistan.
Biden said, “I stand squarely behind my decision. This did unfold more quickly than we anticipated”. He said that the state of Afghan civilians were “gut-wrenching”, but he would stand by his decision of the withdrawal and end America’s longest war.
He also elaborated that he had warned President Ashraf Ghani to be prepared with a civil war with the Taliban after their withdrawal. But they failed to make any preparations.
Biden further went on to say that Afghan leaders had asked the U.S. not to publicly play up any advance efforts for evacuation as it could trigger panic among the public and could cause “a crisis of confidence”
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said that U.S. had taken charge of air traffic control at the Kabul airport and resumed airlifts after suspending them due to the morning’s stampedes by frightened Afghans. It is said that at least seven people are killed in the chaos at the Kabul airport, where thousands were trying to flee the country.
