Surkhet’s High Court orders “FREE admission” in community schools
Kathmandu, June 7. The High Court of Surkhet has issued a pro-tem interim order barring the collection of admission fees in community schools.
The order reads, “The issues of ensuring the rights of the children of getting free education mandatorily till class eight and free education from class nine to 12 cannot be ignored.”
Background
Earlier this year, advocate Khem Raj Jaisi Tiwari filed a writ petition saying that community schools in Surkhet were collecting children’s fees arbitrarily, in contravention of Nepal’s Constitutional right to free education.
On May 24, the court convened a session in which both parties, students, and schools were brought together for discussion.
Yesterday, a division bench of judges Madhav Prasad Pokharel and Punam Singh Chand made a decision regarding the matter.
