Dhaka, Bangladesh. The Bangladeshi government on Monday approved a proposal for increase in the maximum punishment in rape cases to death from life imprisonment.
As per ANI, Bangladesh’s Law minister Anisul Huq told journalists that the proposal was approved at a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and that the president is expected to issue the ordinance on Tuesday.
He said the proposed law is specific that “the maximum punishment is death penalty for the sex offenders.” The Cabinet also agreed to a proposal that trials in rape cases be expedited to a faster competition.
A series of recent sexual assaults had led to protests on streets of the capital, Dhaka, and elsewhere and in social media which forced the government to take the stringent measure against rapists by changing the law.
Under the current law, the maximum punishment in rape cases is life imprisonment. Capital punishment, however, is allowed for cases in which the victim dies.
