Kathmandu, March 25. Afghanistani President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani inaugurated a hydropower dam in the country’s western province on Wednesday.

The inauguration ceremony was held near the Kamal Khan Dam located in Chahar Burjak district and was attended by other officials along with the president.

The hydropower dam project was initiated in the 1970s but was halted due to prolonged conflicts in the country. The project is said to boost the country’s economy and the agriculture sector.

The dam is capable of irrigating 174,000 hectares of crop land and is built over the Helmand river. It will also produce electricity power to bring light to hundreds of thousands of Afghan households. The dam has a storage capacity of 52 million cubic meters of water.

Reports have said that there has been a number of casualties reported by the Afghan national security forces while protecting the dam’s construction from militant attacks.
