Kathmandu, Feb 16: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, known as Prachanda, highlighted Nepal’s vulnerability to climate change impacts despite its minimal contribution to global emissions. Speaking at a conference on the role of parliamentarians in climate change and sustainable development in Kathmandu, he emphasized the urgent need for action to address this critical issue.

Prachanda underscored that Nepal faces the direct and harmful effects of climate change, including landslides, floods, fires, avalanches, and droughts, despite its negligible carbon footprint. He called for greater global cooperation to mitigate these impacts and advocated for climate justice, particularly for least developed countries like Nepal.

Acknowledging the financial and technical challenges in implementing climate change mitigation plans, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of mobilizing resources to enhance local adaptation efforts and ecosystem resilience. He emphasized the need for dialogue between policymakers and parliamentarians worldwide to advocate for climate action and ensure a sustainable future.

Prachanda reaffirmed Nepal’s commitment to the Paris Agreement and outlined national goals, including achieving zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045. He called for increased support, including fulfilling climate finance obligations and expanding access to funds for countries at risk.

The Prime Minister’s remarks underscore Nepal’s determination to address climate change challenges and pursue sustainable development while urging global solidarity and cooperation to confront this shared threat.
