Broke workers struggle to sustain family, returning back to India
Kathmandu, June 19. As the pandemic is yet to come in control, people in Nepal’s Sudur Paschim province have started returning back to India for work.
Agency reports suggest that a rising number of migrating workers are queuing up at the Gauriphanta checkpoint at the Nepal-India border.
According to the Dakebazaar border post of Nepal Police, more than 12,700 Nepali workers crossed the border to India in the month of Jestha. Friday alone, more than 700 people exited the border.
RSS quoted a worker as saying, “We had no choice but to return to India for work, as we fear of dying due to hunger rather than corona.”
India remains a major labour destination for people belonging to the hilly region of Sudur Paschim province. A large number of workers have also been reported from Surkhet, Kalikot, Pyuthan, Bardia and Palpa.
