Malaysia declares amnesty, Nepalis need protection from agents now
Kuala Lumpur. Nepal Labour Unity Society, Malaysia has called on the Nepali Embassy to help protect Nepali migrant workers from being cheated by the employment agents after Malaysia declared amnesty to all illegal migrant s and has planned to implement the ‘Return Recalibration Programme’.
Earlier, if the migrants were caught residing in Malaysia illegally, they would have to suffer imprisonment and face legal complications. This time, however, as Malaysia has provided amnesty to those willing to return to their countries. Nepali workers unaware of procedure to use the facility could fall prey to the agents, which would increase their sufferings.
Nepal Labour Unity Society has informed the Nepali Embassy in Malaysia through a letter as soon as the Malaysian government released the “Brief Details regarding the Return Recalibration Program”.
Since most of the illegal Nepali migrant workers do not know the Malayan language and are not aware of the visa procedures at the Malaysian immigration, the manpower agents could swindle them luring under different pretexts. The society has requested the Nepali Embassy to arrange the return process through the embassy or facilitate the return as it had done the previous year.
As per the new arrangement, the illegal migrant workers have to go to the immigration office most suitable for them, pay a fine as per their illegal stay (maximum 500 ringgits) and receive a checkout memo. They have to take an online appointment for this process.
If the amnesty and ‘return recalibration program’ turns effective, it would directly benefit thousands of Nepali migrant workers living illegally in Malaysia as they would be able to return home without hassles.
